The Doors play The Brickworks!

Or at least one of THE best tribute bands around.  That was the e-mail I received from my brother-in-law; he knows how much I love the Doors and the poetry of Jim Morrison, even though he thinks I'm nuts!  He had heard from a friend that Break On Through was going to be playing at a local club and knew I would want to go.  Being the web traveler that I am *grin*, I had come across many tribute band web sites and had always wondered what it would be like to attend one of their shows.  I had mixed emotions about attending at first as I was uncertain what it would be like and if I would come away with the feeling that somehow Jim had been violated by this "tribute to the doors".  I decided I would go, and after a little sweet talking, I convinced my husband, Dale, (who is a casual Doors listener) to attend with me.

The night started off with much anticipation on my part and apathy on Dale's part.  We arrived 40 minutes early, and waited by what we thought was the entrance but was really the bands' and employees' entrance.  As we stood there talking, I noticed the show posters on the side of the building. Dale took one down for me.
I then noticed a man wandering around outside of the building appearing rather confused; and I said  "I bet that's the singer!"  He was wearing a tee shirt and shorts, his brown hair was shoulder length and wavy and his face looked so much like that of Jim Morrisons.  "Do you think so?" Dale said as he followed him to see where he went.  A minute later, I found Dale standing next to this man who said he was indeed the singer for Break on Through.  Apparently he had misplaced his keys and was trying to find his fellow band members so he could get the things he needed out of their van.  Being the helpful person that I am *s* I decided I would try and help him.
We walked up the street to find the Mexican food restaurant where his friends were supposed to be eating, but they were not there. Dale and I headed back so we could still get good seats.
The first band to play was a local band who were quite good. We enjoyed them while I sat and drank long island ice teas (big mistake!) and waited for Break on Through.  There were mixed ages in the attending crowd, some who looked well on their way to a "good time".  When Break on Through came out, I was still unsure what to expect, but as they began to play, I closed my eyes to take in the fantastic feel of the music.  Out comes this leather clad man who looked so much like Jim Morrison, and I said to Dale, "that WAS the guy we were trying to help find his friends".  Everyone started cheering and dancing as he began singing; he sounded so much like Jim.  I sat and took in everything, the music, the singing, the people around me and the great time everyone was having.  After 3 long island ice teas I just couldn't stay in my seat any longer: I had to dance!  I made my way to the dance floor, joining in with many others moving to the music, taking in it's intoxicating rhythms.  Closing my eyes again, I could feel what it might have been like to hear the doors live.
The band was great!  The music was perfect!  Ed dressed the part of Jim quite well, even down to the beaded vest he wore and of course the leathers.  He emulated Jim's movements perfectly.  I really enjoyed it when he came down into the crowd and danced with us, making us feel more a part of the whole thing.  The bouncer wanted to remove one rather over-enthusiastic fan who came up on the stage and nearly fell into the drums, but the band motioned that it was all right.  He sat on the stage in a daze, played the maracas and danced next to Ed, it was great!  When the night was over my head was spinning from the long island ice teas and the hypnotic music, I wanted it to go on forever.  I left with a feeling that these guys truly are talented musicians and are indeed a "tribute" to The Doors.  Even Dale loved the performance, saying if they ever returned, he would love to go see them again, and of course I'll be there too!
